Muntjac Deer

The facts

There are six species of deer found in this country. The Muntjac deer has been introduced to England, with wild deer originating from escapes from Woburn Park around 1925. Muntjac have expanded very rapidly, and are now present in most English counties south of the M62 motorway and have also expanded their range into Wales. It is anticipated that muntjac may soon become the most numerous species of deer in England and may have also crossed the border into Scotland with a couple of specimens appearing in Northern Ireland in 2009; they have been spotted in the republic of Ireland in 2010, almost certainly having reached there with some human assistance.

Where do Muntjac Deer live?

Muntjac do not live in herds, they are usually found solitary or in small family groups. They share no joint purpose, as with herding varieties of deer, they are individuals and opportunists. Their primitive digestive systems require Muntjac to browse almost continually on the tastiest seasonal flora. Once an area is exhausted they move on to find new feeding grounds and territories. Regrettably in this overcrowded country the natural behaviour of the Muntjac is incompatible with the wishes of modern man.

Why keep Muntjac Deer under control?

They also gobble up rare orchids and do untold damage to new shoots in managed, coppiced woodland, destroying both young trees and our most beautiful forest flowers, such as bluebells. And god forbid they find a way into your garden. Muntjac go wild for rose buds, and will strip your crop bare in moments. But their destructive tendencies have a chilling impact on other species, too. Muntjac will devour many of the shrubs that birds nest in, may be causing woodland bird numbers to tumble.

Prevention & Control

A visit by our professional, qualified deer manager can be arranged. The best form of defence is a high stock fence to keep them out. If this is not possible shooting is the only viable option, however strict legislation and safety practices must apply.
